The Return of the Minimum Guy: Everything We Know as ‘The Family Man 2’ Trailer is Set to Drop on May 19

The wait is finally drawing to a close for fans of India’s most relatable spy. Amazon Prime Video’s critically acclaimed and immensely popular series, The Family Man, is all set to unveil the trailer for its highly anticipated second season on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at 9 AM.

After months of speculation and a major release date postponement, the creators and the stellar cast have confirmed the trailer drop, sending a fresh wave of excitement across the digital entertainment landscape. Manoj Bajpayee’s Srikant Tiwari, the middle-class man juggling a secret life as a world-class spy with the mundanity of domesticity, is back to face a new, high-stakes threat. But before the full trailer reveals all, here is a breakdown of what we know about Season 2, its plot, and the major new additions to the cast.

The Journey So Far: Srikant’s New Normal

Season 1 of The Family Man ended with a massive cliffhanger. The city of Delhi was on the verge of a catastrophic chemical gas leak orchestrated by a terrorist group, and Srikant’s TASC team members, Milind (Sunny Hinduja) and Zoya (Shreya Dhanwanthary), were trapped inside the chemical plant. The first season brilliantly blended high-octane espionage with the everyday struggles of Srikant’s family life, where his wife, Suchitra (Priyamani), and children, Dhriti and Atharv, remained oblivious to his true profession.

A New Beginning (or is it?): The Corporate Life

Season 2 is confirmed to pick up after the devastating events of the first season. Srikant Tiwari, reportedly feeling guilty and unhappy with the consequences of his high-pressure job, has seemingly quit the Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell (TASC) and has opted for a “minimum guy” existence in a 9-to-5 corporate IT job.

Early promotional material and reports suggest that this new life is not proving to be the safe haven he might have hoped for. The trailer is expected to showcase the humour that arises from Srikant’s internal dissatisfaction with his corporate role, where he must listen to a boss he barely respects, while his true spy instincts constantly resurface.

Domestic Drama Takes Center Stage

The duality of Srikant’s life has always been the heart of the series, and this tension is set to intensify. Srikant’s marriage to Suchitra is facing significant strain.

Reports indicate that the couple will be seen attending marriage counselling sessions, highlighting the chasm that Srikant’s secrecy has created. Furthermore, the biggest unresolved plot point from Season 1—the lingering question of what transpired between Suchitra and her colleague Arvind on their trip to Lonavala—remains a major familial cliffhanger that Season 2 is expected to address. For Srikant, saving his marriage might prove to be a mission even more complicated than saving the country.

A New Face of Danger: Enter Raji

The biggest buzz surrounding the second season is the arrival of a formidable new antagonist, Raji, played by South Indian superstar Samantha Akkineni (now Samantha Ruth Prabhu), who is making her highly-anticipated digital debut with this series.

Samantha Akkineni as Raji

Raji is described as a new, powerful, and brutal adversary for Srikant Tiwari and TASC. She is a Sri Lankan Tamilian militant, and the new season’s core conflict is expected to take Srikant out of his familiar urban setting and into the Southern and North-Eastern parts of the country.

  • Character Depth: Early reports suggest Raji is a complex character. While she is a single-minded fighter determined to carry out a dangerous mission, the show is expected to explore her past, including the brutalities she has faced, adding layers of nuance to her role.
  • The Mission: The main thrust of the TASC operation in Season 2 is to prevent a deadly plot involving a powerful enemy, which includes elements of a ‘Tamil government in exile’ seeking revenge against the Indian government, likely targeting Prime Minister Basu (played by veteran actress Seema Biswas). This new storyline promises to raise the political stakes significantly from the previous season.

The Core Team and Creators

The returning cast will see the much-loved ensemble back in action, with the series being helmed once again by the creator and director duo, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.

  • Manoj Bajpayee as Srikant Tiwari: The man who is a “middle-class man but a world-class spy.” He will be battling internal family crises alongside external threats.
  • Sharib Hashmi as J.K. Talpade: Srikant’s loyal and affable partner at TASC is confirmed to return, with his chemistry and friendship with Srikant being a major highlight of the series.
  • Priyamani as Suchitra Tiwari: Srikant’s wife, whose frustrations with her marriage and her own personal life will be a major sub-plot.
  • Supporting Cast: The team will be supported by a strong cast of returning actors, including Sharad Kelkar, Sunny Hinduja, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Shahab Ali, Vedant Sinha, and Ashlesha Thakur, alongside new faces from the Tamil cinema industry.

The creators, Raj & D.K., have promised a thrilling storyline that will deliver on the promise of the first season. With the trailer launch on May 19, all eyes will be on how the director duo introduces the new threat, the extent of Srikant’s domestic troubles, and, most importantly, the final, confirmed release date for the full nine-part thriller.

The series is officially slated to premiere on June 4, 2021, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The countdown has begun for the trailer, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if Srikant can manage to save the country, fix his marriage, and finally stop being the ‘minimum guy.’
